Creating a Literary Prize

Look into the literature section of any newspaper, magazine, or website, and you will be confronted with a wealth of literary prizes, all of which concentrate on different things.  The Baileys Women’s Prize, which I’m sure every reader is familiar with, concentrates on fiction by women; the Orwell Prize takes political writing as its focus; and the National Book Award selects the ‘best UK writers and their works’.

I come to you today with a challenge.  With this in mind, if you were to create a literary prize, what would you focus on, and why?  What would you call it?  If you had to relate your choices to books which you have read in the last year or two, which books would make your shortlist, and who would win the prize?
