  1. The film kept my interest but I thought it was unremarkable. There are many, many unlikeable characters in fine fiction. So when I hear a reviewer dislikes a character I’m not sure what to do with that information unless I have more to go on. Perhaps some of the excellence in the writing is from the author showing us an unlikeable person who has some great flaw or flaws. As for pacing, I have to hold books written in 1874 to a different standard entirely. I think Far from the Madding is a magnificent, riveting love story.
