Personal Reading Challenges 2014

It is perhaps a touch too early to be posting my personal reading challenges for next year, but as I have already finalised my list, I felt there was no harm in doing so.  As opposed to the many reading goals I set myself in 2013 (the biggest of them being to get through the rest of Shakespeare’s plays which I had not previously studied or read), I have decided to give myself just two reading challenges for the coming year.

Reading Challenge One – Monthly Authors
I have made myself a list of twenty four authors, one male and one female for each month, which I feel I need to read the work of.  For several of these authors, I have read one or two of their books and have enjoyed them, but have never got around any more of their novels for one reason or another.  I have tried to select varied authors writing in different languages and about different subjects.  I have split the authors into different pairs, and will be reading at least one book by each during the month in which they feature.  Without further ado, my list is as follows:

January – Elizabeth Taylor and F. Scott Fitzgerald
February –
Alice Hoffman and Jasper Fforde
March –
Agatha Christie and Richard Yates
April –
Louise Erdrich and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
May –
Jamaica Kincaid and Julian Barnes
June –
Margaret Drabble and Orhan Pamuk
July –
Dawn Powell and Emile Zola
August –
Lorrie Moore and Cormac McCarthy
September –
Anne Tyler and Martin Amis
October –
Joyce Carol Oates and Knut Hamsun
November –
Hella Haasse and John Fowles
December –
Zoe Heller and John Buchan

Reading Challenge Two – The Admiration Challenge
I must admit that I sadly couldn’t think of a better title for this challenge whilst in the process of drawing up my list, but the one I have selected will do as well as anything.  For this challenge, I have selected a list of books which are the favourite reads of people I admire (all of which will be placed in brackets after the title and author).  I have not sorted these into months, but will pick them up at random throughout the year.  These are the books which I am planning to read:

East of Eden by John Steinbeck (Frank Turner)
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (Frank Turner)
The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler (Mark Hoppus, Blink 182)
Dear Scott, Dearest Zelda: The Love Letters of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald (Ben Gibbard, Death Cab for Cutie)
The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom (Logan Lerman)
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom (Logan Lerman)
A P.G. Wodehouse novel (Stephen Fry)
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro (Andrew Garfield)
The Book of Laughter and Forgetting by Milan Kundera (Conor Oberst, Bright Eyes)
The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz (Jonathan Safran Foer)
To The End of the Land by David Grossman (Nicole Krauss)
Too Loud a Solitude by Bohumil Hrabal (Nicole Krauss)
